What do you want to be when you grow up? A professional athlete, a successful businessman, a famous painter or carpenter, a loving parent and faithful husband, or something else entirely?
No matter old you are, you’re always growing up and you should always be working towards an audacious but realistic dream.
If you want to be a professional runner or climber, you need to run or climb or learn something new about running or climbing every day.
If you dream of becoming a successful businesswoman you need to practise, train, learn something new and build your network and brand daily.
Be a good parent? You need to devote meaningful time to your children and spouse.
Unfortunately, there are only 24 hours in a day. No matter how hard you try, you cannot be everything.
This is probably one reason why the Mercury and Apollo astronauts — who spend years devoting all their energy to going to space and the moon — had very high divorce rates. Likewise, many successful athletes tend to be unsuccessful in business, and many hardworking businesspeople lead broken homes.
Life is a series of long-term tradeoffs.
Work out what you want to be (or don’t want to be or cant be) when you grow up. Use this as your guide for how you carve up your 24 hours.
